Do I Really Need the Holy Spirit for the Small Everyday Stuff?

By Angela D. Thomas, DrPH, MPH, MBA
Yes. The Holy Spirit is not a special-occasions gift you only pull out for crises and miracles. He is an everyday Helper for the ordinary, unglamorous parts of your life. Reserving Him for emergencies means you are missing most of what He was given to do.
Let me ask you something. Do you have the good stuff in your house? The good china that only comes out for Thanksgiving. The good dishes, the good linen. The room nobody is allowed to sit in unless it is a special occasion. The expensive handbag you only carry a few times a year, the good dress you are saving, the good wig for the right event. We all have that thing that is too precious for a regular Tuesday.
And a whole lot of us are treating the Holy Spirit exactly like the good china.
Are We Reserving the Holy Spirit for Emergencies?
If we are honest, yes. And it comes from a good place. We know the Holy Spirit is God. We know He is power. So we reverence Him so much that we tuck Him away for the big moments. We only reach for Him when things go all the way left. We only tap in when we need healing, when we need a miracle, when we are flat out desperate. The rest of the week, we handle life on our own and leave Him in the cabinet like grandma's dishes.
Here is the shift I want you to make. The Holy Spirit is powerful, yes. But He is also practical. He is both at the very same time, and we have got to stop picking one.
How Can He Be Powerful and Practical at the Same Time?
I know it feels hard to reconcile. Try it like this. What if your boss was also your personal assistant? That feels strange, doesn't it? The one with all the authority also being the one who helps you with the daily details. But that is exactly who the Holy Spirit is. Just like Jesus was fully God and fully man at the same time, the Holy Spirit is fully God, fully powerful, worthy of all your reverence, and at the very same time your day to day Helper for the ordinary stuff. You do not have to choose between the powerful One and the practical one. He is both.
And the Bible does not hide this. It flat out calls Him a Helper. John 14:26 (NKJV) says, "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you." He teaches you and reminds you. That is daily. John 16:13 (NKJV) says, "However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth." That is daily guidance. And Romans 8:26 (NKJV) says, "Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." He helps you in your weakness, and you have a weakness every single day.
What Does It Look Like to Use Him Daily?
It looks like inviting Him into the ordinary. The decision at work you are not sure about. The conversation with your child you keep getting wrong. The patience you run out of in traffic. The words you cannot find when your friend is hurting. The thing you keep worrying about at two in the morning. All of that is Helper territory. He is not annoyed by your small stuff. Your small stuff is the very stuff He came to help you carry.
Think about how much of your life is actually made of small stuff. The big crises are rare. Most of your days are ordinary, and ordinary is right where we lose the most ground, one short temper and one anxious thought at a time. If the Helper only shows up for the emergencies, He is missing the ninety-five percent of your life where you needed Him most.
And notice, none of this means you love Him less or reverence Him less. This is not about dragging the Holy Spirit down off the pedestal. He absolutely belongs up there. It is about realizing that the same holy, powerful, deity-level Spirit you rightly reverence actually wants to be in the everyday with you. You can hold Him in the highest honor and still hand Him your Tuesday. In fact, that is exactly what honors Him, using the gift the way it was meant to be used instead of admiring it from a distance.
So here is the whole tool, plain and simple. The Holy Spirit is not a special-occasions only gift. He is a daily gift. Yes, He does the miracles and the healing and the big holy moments. But He also does Monday. He also does the grocery store and the group text and the hard email. Do not save your most powerful Helper for the once-a-year crisis and then wonder why the everyday feels so heavy. Bring the good china out. Use it every single day. That is what it is for.
Take this to the Word yourself. John 14:26, John 16:13, Romans 8:26.
What This Means for You
What is one ordinary, everyday area of your life you have never once thought to invite the Holy Spirit into?
Yesterday we saw that the Holy Spirit is God living in you. Today we pulled Him out of the special-occasion cabinet and into your daily life. Next up, why so many of us own this gift and still never take it out of the box.
I teach God's Word weekly inside the SheShed Community, and this is exactly the kind of teaching that hits different when you're in the room for it. The replay of this teaching, “An Awesome Gift,” is available inside the community as well. Come sit with us.
