Why Your Testimony Is More Powerful Than You Think

Your testimony is not just your story. It is someone else's survival guide. When you share what God brought you through, you are handing your sister the film she needs to recognize the enemy's play before he runs it on her. That is not vulnerability. That is warfare.

There is a scripture we quote all the time, and almost every time we quote it, we only say part of it. Revelation 12:11 (NKJV) says, "And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death."

Three parts. Most of us stop at the testimony.

What Are the Three Parts of Revelation 12:11?

The first part is the blood of the Lamb. That is Christ. His blood is what gives you access to God. Without it, none of the rest of this works. The blood is the foundation.

The second part is the word of your testimony. That is your story. What God delivered you from. What He brought you through. Where you were and where He brought you out. That is the part we know and love to quote.

But the third part is the one that changes everything. They did not love their lives to the death. That is self-sacrifice. That is you being willing to lay your story down, the parts that are messy, the parts you are not proud of, the parts where you did not make the best decisions, so that someone else can learn from it and overcome what you already survived.

When you put the testimony and the self-sacrifice together, here is what you get. People need your film. They need to study what God did in your life so that when the enemy comes at them with the same play, they know what to do. They have seen the move before, because you were willing to show it to them.

Why Do We Hold Back Our Testimony?

Usually it comes down to two things. We are afraid of what people will think about us, or we are ashamed of the decisions we made that landed us in the situation in the first place. So we go quiet. We keep the story to ourselves. We let people see the victory without ever showing them the battle.

And when we do that, we are withholding a weapon from our brothers and sisters.

I will be real with you about this. My first Bible class at a church I used to attend, I shared about my mom getting shot and choosing to live for her kids. A woman came up to me afterward and said her friend had just been shot and did not want to live. She said she was going to take what she heard and share it with her friend so she could make a decision to live for her children. My willingness to share something painful from my own life gave that woman something she could take to her friend in a crisis. I never got to hear how the story ended. But I know that my testimony went somewhere I never could have gone myself.

That is the power of self-sacrifice. It is not just about you. It never was.

What Happens When We Share?

Sharing your testimony does two things at once. It encourages the person who hears it, and it takes power away from the enemy. Because here is one of his tactics. He wants the things he used against you to stay secret. He wants you to carry the shame of those seasons alone. Because as long as you do, no one around you can learn from them, no one can be encouraged by how God moved in them, and he can keep using the same plays on the people closest to you.

But when you open your mouth and say, here is where I was, here is what he tried to use against me, and here is how God moved, you expose the play. And exposed plays lose their power.

Proverbs 18:21 (NKJV) says, "Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit." Your testimony spoken out loud carries life. It carries it to the person sitting next to you who is in the middle of the same fight you already came through.

Shed the fear of judgment about where your story started. Shed the shame that keeps you quiet about what God had to deliver you from. And shed the belief that your testimony is only about you. Someone is waiting on your story the same way that woman was waiting on mine.

Take this to the Word yourself. Revelation 12:11, Proverbs 18:21, Romans 10:9-10, Psalm 107:2.

What This Means for You

What is one part of your story that you have been holding back that God might want to use to help someone else overcome what you already survived?

This continues The Game series. Last time, we talked about why the same struggles keep repeating and how to study your own film to break the cycle. Tomorrow we close out the series with the practical piece, how to actually fight back using both defense and offense the way Scripture lays it out.
