Why Faith Requires Action (Creation vs Formation)

Faith without action cannot produce what God already created in you. Scripture shows a clear pattern: God creates in spirit first, formation requires action second, and faith is what carries you in the gap between the two.
We've already seen how words create. Now here's the second reality Scripture shows us, and this one is where a lot of us get stuck. Actions form.
What Does the Bible Say About the Difference Between Creation and Formation?
We already saw it. God spoke man into existence in spirit, in Genesis 1:26-27, before there was ever a body to hold that design. But spoken is not the same as formed. Genesis 2:7 (NKJV) says, "And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living being." Words created him in spirit first. Then God took action and formed him.
It happens again with Eve. Genesis 2:21-22 (NKJV), "And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept, and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man." Formed. Crafted. It took action.
Think about anything made with real craftsmanship. A designer doesn't simply imagine a piece and have it appear. Artisans take the materials and the vision and they actually work it, piece by piece, until what was only a design becomes something you can hold. Creation gives you the design. Formation is the work of bringing it into the visible world.
The Myth We Need to Shed
Here's something I need to clear up. A lot of us were taught that everything, including Adam, was created on day six and that was the end of the story. That's not what the text says. Adam wasn't formed until after the seventh day. Words created the design first. The forming came after. If you've been waiting on something God spoke over you to just show up fully formed with no action required on your part, that belief isn't coming from Scripture. It never worked that way for Adam, and it isn't how it works for you.
Where Faith Lives
Here's what holds the space between creation and formation together. Faith. Hebrews 11:1 (NKJV) says, "Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." When something has already been created in spirit but you can't see it yet in your actual life, faith is what you stand on in that gap. It's the evidence of what hasn't shown up yet, while the forming is still happening.
That's exactly why faith without works is dead. Faith was never meant to sit still. It was meant to move you toward the formation of what God already created in you. You can believe something was spoken over your life and still need to take real action for it to take shape. Believing it and walking it out are not the same thing, and Scripture never asked you to choose only one.
Take this to the Word yourself. James 2:14-26, John 3:16, John 1:14, Ephesians 2:10.
What This Means for You
What has God already created in you that is still waiting on your action to take visible form?
This continues The Designer You series. Last time, we talked about what it actually means to be made in God's image. Next, we'll get into choices and how the small decisions you make every single day are part of how God's design becomes visible in your life.
If a written post stirred something in you, wait until you hear it taught live. I teach God's Word weekly inside the SheShed Community, and this is exactly the kind of teaching that hits different when you're in the room for it. The replay of this teaching, "The Designer You," is available inside the community as well. Come sit with us.
