Something is off. Not with you as a person, but with the version of you that was shaped by pain, by the fall, and by an enemy who is more strategic than most of us give him credit for. The original you, the one God designed before any of that happened, is still in there. Scripture shows exactly when the counterfeit showed up and why it feels so much like the real thing.

You love God. You're trying. You might be showing up to church, reading your Bible, doing the things. And still there's this quiet feeling you can't quite shake. Something doesn't feel right. Something feels off. Not in an obvious way, but in that deep, internal way where you keep reacting in ways you don't like, returning to patterns you thought you were done with, or just feeling like the version of you walking around out there doesn't fully match who you know God says you are.

That feeling is not your imagination. It's real. And it has a name.

You Were Designed Before the Counterfeit Showed Up

Genesis 2:25 (NKJV) says, "And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed." End of chapter two. No shame. No fear. No hiding. No blame. Just two people walking in the fullness of how God designed them, completely secure, completely unashamed, completely aligned.

That was the original design. That was Gizmo.

If you ever saw the movie Gremlins, you know Gizmo. He's the original. He's the good one. Everybody loves Gizmo. There are three rules for taking care of a mogwai like Gizmo. Don't get him wet, don't feed him after midnight, and don't expose him to bright light. We're going to focus on the water rule today, because what happens when Gizmo gets wet is exactly what happened to us. Little fur balls pop off of him. And those fur balls? They become gremlins. They look like Gizmo. They came from Gizmo. But something is a little edgy, a little off, a little different from the original.

That's the counterfeit.

What the Counterfeit Looks Like in Genesis

Genesis 3:6-7 (NKJV) says, "So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree desirable to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate. Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked, and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings."

That's the moment. Before that verse, innocence. After that verse, a whole list of things God never created.

Shame. God did not create shame. Fear. God did not create fear. Hiding. God did not create the desire to run and cover yourself from the One who made you. Blame. God did not create that either. All of those things showed up after one moment of disobedience. They are not part of your original design. They are counterfeits of it.

And the reason they feel so real, so normal, so much like just who you are? Because the counterfeit always looks like the original. Spike the gremlin has the same basic shape as Gizmo. If you put them next to each other you can tell something's off, but at a glance? Close enough to fool you.

The Shed

Here's what I need you to shed today. Shed the belief that everything you feel, every reaction you have, every pattern you carry, is just who you are and always will be. Some of it is. Some of it is your original design showing up exactly the way God created it. But some of it? Some of it is counterfeit. Things that got birthed in you through pain, through fear, through bad choices, through things done to you that you never asked for. And those things feel like you because you've carried them so long.

But just because something feels familiar doesn't mean it's original.

The first step to getting free from the counterfeit is recognizing it for what it is. Not beating yourself up over it. Not drowning in shame about it, because shame itself is a counterfeit. Just being honest enough to say, this right here? God didn't design this. And there's a better version of me underneath it.

Take this to the Word yourself. Genesis 2:25, Genesis 3:6-10, Romans 8:1.

What This Means for You

What is one pattern in your life that you've accepted as just who you are, but that doesn't produce peace, alignment, or anything that looks like God's design?

This is the first post in a five part series called The Counterfeit You, where we walk through how the counterfeit version of ourselves shows up, why it feels so convincing, and how God restores us to the original. Next up, we'll look at how the Designer always knows when something isn't the original.

I teach God's Word weekly inside the SheShed Community, and this is exactly the kind of teaching that hits different when you're in the room for it. The replay of this teaching, "The Counterfeit You," is available inside the community as well. Come sit with us.
