If I'm Saved, Why Hasn't My Behavior Changed?

Your spirit changed the moment you accepted Christ. Instantly. Completely. But your mind, your habits, and your learned responses did not get that memo overnight. That's not a salvation problem. That's a transformation process, and Scripture is very clear about how it works.
You gave your life to God and you meant it. You really did. So why are you still reacting the same way? Still struggling with the same things? Still feeling like the outside of your life doesn't match what happened on the inside when you said yes to Jesus? If that's where you are, I need you to hear this clearly. You are not broken. You are not doing it wrong. You are in a process that the Bible actually tells us to expect.
Born Again in Spirit. Not Yet Transformed in Mind.
Here's the thing about Gizmo and the gremlins. There's one thing that kills a gremlin. Light. Bright light is the one thing they cannot survive. And that is not an accident when you hold it up against Scripture, because Jesus is the Light of the world. When you accept Christ, the Light comes in. Your spirit is renewed instantly. You are restored to original design in your spirit the moment you are born again.
But here's what doesn't happen instantly. Your mind.
Romans 12:2 (NKJV) says, "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Paul didn't say you will be instantly transformed. He said be transformed by the renewing of your mind. That word renewing is ongoing. It is a process. It is something you participate in over time.
You were born into a counterfeit world. Every single one of us was. We grew up learning counterfeit ways of thinking, counterfeit ways of coping, counterfeit ways of responding to pain and fear and rejection. Those patterns got reinforced over years and years before you ever said yes to God. Your spirit got renewed in a moment. But those thought patterns, those habits, those learned responses? They have to be unlearned. And that takes time and intentionality.
What That Looks Like Practically
Here's where I want to be really honest with you. When I think about Angie from Detroit, she didn't disappear the day I got saved. She was still in there. The difference is that now I have the Word of God to hold up against her. Now I have the Holy Spirit helping me recognize when she's about to show up. Now I have people in my life who can see her coming and call it out. But I still have to do the work of renewing my mind. Every single day.
That is what transformation actually looks like. It is not one dramatic moment where every old pattern falls off and you wake up a completely different person. It is the daily, intentional process of choosing the Word over the counterfeit thought. Choosing the Spirit-led response over the learned one. Choosing to submit to what God says about you over what pain taught you to believe.
Unlike the counterfeit industry, where Louis Vuitton would never take a counterfeit bag back and try to restore it to an original, God will. That is exactly what He does. He takes every counterfeit version of us, in all our shame and fear and hiding and blame, and He says, I can work with this. I can restore this. I can transform this. But you have to keep showing up and letting Me do it.
The Standing Rule
2 Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) says, "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new." That is the declaration over your spirit. New creation. Done. Settled. But the life that reflects that new creation? That is built through the renewing of your mind. Through the Word. Through community. Through the ongoing work of letting God transform what the counterfeit world shaped in you.
Imagine a world where every believer was that in tune with God's Word, that in tune with the enemy's game, that in tune with their own patterns and entry points. We would walk in the fullness of what He created us to have. We wouldn't be in corners. We wouldn't be depressed. We wouldn't have anxiety ruling our lives. We would be the lender and not the borrower, the head and not the tail. That world is possible. But it requires us to do the work of transformation, not just the moment of salvation.
Take this to the Word yourself. Romans 12:1-2, 2 Corinthians 5:17, John 3:3-7, Ephesians 4:22-24.
What This Means for You
What is one counterfeit pattern in your thinking that you know needs to be renewed, and what does God's Word say about it?
